Description:
Carl Mengert -- Watercolor/Mixed Media

"As a watercolor artist, I use expressive colors and dynamic shapes to invent interesting positive and negative spaces. New discoveries, by playing with watercolor washes, line, and value relationships, are important in my work."

"As a watercolor artist, I use expressive colors and dynamic shapes to invent interesting positive and negative spaces. New discoveries, by playing with watercolor washes, line, and value relationships, are important in my work. By combining natural and abstract sources, I try to create appealing compositions. Most of my subject matter is from familiar surroundings in Door County."

A Door County watercolor artist, Carl grew up and studied art in Milwaukee. After serving in WWII, he taught art in Edgerton, WI. Then, earning a Master's Degree in Library Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he worked as Edgerton Junior High Librarian, followed by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and finally returning to the Edgerton High School Library. He retired in 1985 and moved to Sturgeon Bay, where he and his family had summered since 1971.

During the summers of 1984 and 1985, Carl studied art with Bridget Austin, Lionel Wathall and James Range, who encouraged him to devote serious time to watercolors. Most recently, he has studied painting with Ratindra Das.
