Will Roberts - Pastels and Acrylics
Will Roberts was an art teacher at Sturgeon Bay High School for many years. During his teaching years Will worked in ceramics, printmaking, and photography. These mediums focused on his love for the natural environment: molding the earth into vessels, both functional and sculptural in form, and using images from nature in photo assemblages. Upon retiring he turned to pastels where there has been an explosion of color, as he continues to explore his love of nature.
Speaking of his work Will states:
My images come from sketches I do while hiking and biking back roads and trails. My work reflects my relationship with nature, while at the same time simply being bright and playful. To be in the woods, on the water, in the wind or rain or sun, is always an act of discovery. To walk the land, float down rivers, paddle lakes, travel back roads, lay in meadows, or sit on rock ledges: I have come to believe that what is heard, smelled, and touched, is richer and more telling than what is seen.
The colors of the earth are gorgeous and obvious, but there is far more. My work is not a visual replication, but an expression of all the senses. I may transform a cool breeze into lime-green; renewal and growth into blues, pinks, purples, reds; waters into kaki, orange, lemon white; and the passage of time into browns, blacks, or deep forest greens.
As you encounter my work it is my hope that you will feel, you will experience, and you will discover and celebrate the earth in new ways.
